Have Mercy, Lord

A prayer asking the Lord to show mercy to sinners, bring light to those who are lost, and draw close to those who no longer know how to seek him.

Have Mercy, Lord

Lord, you said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Have mercy, Lord, on your creatures. See how little we understand, how poorly we know what we truly desire, and how often we fail to ask for what we need.

Give us light, Lord. Reveal your power and your mercy.

I know it is difficult to ask you to love those who do not love you, to open the door to those who do not knock, and to give health to those who prefer their illness and continue seeking what harms them. Yet you said, my Lord, that you came to seek sinners.

Do not look upon our blindness, my God, but upon the precious Blood your Son shed for us.

May your mercy shine through our sin, for we are the work of your hands.

O compassionate and loving Lord of my soul, you also said: “Come to me, all you who thirst, and I will give you drink.” How can those who burn with desire for the miserable things of this earth fail to be deeply thirsty? They need living water so that these flames do not consume them.

Remember that you came into the world to heal needs as great as these. See, my God, how your enemies gain ground. Have mercy on those who show no mercy to themselves. Since their sorrow has left them unable or unwilling to come to you, go to them yourself, my God.
