Prayer to the Suffering Christ

A devotional prayer and meditation on Christ's Passion, expressing love for Jesus crucified and asking for comfort, faith, and deeper trust in suffering.

Prayer to the Suffering Christ

The Prayer to the Suffering Christ is a devotion that turns to Jesus in moments of pain and difficulty, especially as we contemplate his Passion and death upon the Cross. Through it, believers can express love for Jesus and ask for his help and consolation.

It is also a way to meditate on Christ's sacrifice and self-giving love. Praying it can deepen our relationship with Jesus and strengthen our faith.

The Suffering Christ

"They have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones."

It is not the heaven you have promised me, my God,
that moves me to love you;
nor is it the hell I fear
that moves me to stop offending you.

You move me, Lord; I am moved by seeing you
nailed to a cross and mocked,
by seeing your wounded body,
by your suffering and your death.

Your love moves me so deeply
that even if there were no heaven, I would love you,
and even if there were no hell, I would revere you.

You need give me nothing for me to love you;
for even if I did not hope for what I hope from you,
I would still love you as I do.

Amen.
