Saint Rose of Lima was born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru, in 1586. Remembered for her prayer, simplicity, and care for people who were poor or sick, she became the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church.
Life and Spiritual Legacy
At about twenty years of age, Rose became a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, inspired in part by Saint Catherine of Siena. She pursued a life centered on Christ through prayer, penance, and charity. She cared for people in need and sought to turn ordinary work into service offered to God.
Some of her severe penitential practices reflect the spirituality of her era and should not be imitated without prudent spiritual guidance. Her enduring example is found above all in love of God, compassion for the suffering, humility, and generous service.
Devotion and Traditions
Catholic tradition associates Saint Rose with healings and with prayers for the protection of Lima during the threat of a Dutch privateer fleet in 1615. Accounts of favors received through her intercession contributed to a devotion that spread throughout Latin America and beyond. Pope Clement X canonized her in 1671.
