Psalm 72 (71): Give Your Justice to the King

Psalm 72 prays for a just king who defends the poor, brings peace, rescues the oppressed, and becomes a blessing to every nation.

Psalm 72 (71): Give Your Justice to the King

O God, give your judgment to the king
and your justice to the king's son,
so that he may govern your people with righteousness
and your humble ones with fairness.

May the mountains bring peace to the people
and the hills bear the fruit of justice.
May he defend the humble among the people,
rescue the children of the poor,
and crush the oppressor.

May he endure as long as the sun
and as long as the moon, through every generation.
May he descend like rain upon the grass,
like showers that water the earth.

May righteousness flourish in his days
and peace abound until the moon is no more.
May he rule from sea to sea,
from the great river to the ends of the earth.

May his rivals bow before him
and his enemies fall to the dust.
May the kings of Tarshish and the islands
bring him tribute.

May the kings of Sheba and Arabia
offer him gifts.
May every king bow before him
and every nation serve him.

For he will deliver the poor who cry out
and the afflicted who have no protector.
He will show compassion to the weak and needy
and save the lives of the poor.
He will rescue them from violence,
for their blood is precious in his sight.

May he live, and may the gold of Sheba be given to him.
May people pray for him continually
and bless him throughout the day.

May grain abound throughout the land
and wave upon the heights of the mountains.
May its fruit flourish like Lebanon,
and may people thrive like grass in the fields.

May his name endure forever
and his renown last as long as the sun.
May every people be blessed through him,
and may all nations call him blessed.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone performs wonders.
Blessed forever be his glorious name,
and may his glory fill the whole earth.
Amen and amen.
