Saint Agatha of Catania was a young Christian martyr of the third century, known for her strength of faith and courage in resisting persecution. She is regarded as a patron saint of women with breast diseases and as a protector against fires and volcanic eruptions. Her feast is celebrated on February 5.
Who Was Saint Agatha?
Saint Agatha was born in Sicily and consecrated her life to God while still young. She rejected the advances of the Roman governor Quintianus, who had her imprisoned and brutally tortured. One of the cruelest tortures was the mutilation of her breasts, which led the faithful to invoke her especially for women's health. She died forgiving those who persecuted her, and her witness of faith has endured through the centuries.
