Receiving Holy Communion is a profound act of union with God and one of the most intimate ways of drawing close to our Lord. We should therefore prepare our hearts and minds with a prayer before Communion.
Here are several prayers that can help you prepare. May God be with you.
Prayers Before Holy Communion
Prayer of Preparation for Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Sacred Host consecrated by the priest at Holy Mass.
I believe, Jesus, that you are true God and true man: God with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and man like us.
I believe that as God you are present everywhere, and that in your humanity you are in heaven and truly present in the consecrated Host.
Increase my faith, Lord, so that I may receive you worthily. I hope in your goodness, for I desire to receive you with devotion. Remember that I have repented and resolved, with your grace, not to sin again. Come to me, my Jesus; I never want to leave you.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. I bless and praise one God in three Persons.
Prayer Immediately Before Communion
Lord Jesus Christ, may the reception of your Body and Blood not bring me judgment and condemnation, but through your mercy be for me protection in mind and body and a healing remedy.
Lord, since you give yourself entirely to me in the Eucharist, I trust that you will have mercy on me and grant the graces I need for eternal salvation.
Prayer to Receive Christ Worthily
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit, your death brought life to the world. Through the reception of your Body and Blood, free me from sin and from every evil. Keep me faithful to your commandments and never let me be separated from you.
A Child's Prayer Before Communion
My God, help me make a good Communion. Mary, my Mother, and my holy guardian angel, prepare my heart to receive God.
My Jesus, I firmly believe, because you have said it, that you are truly present in the consecrated Host and that in Holy Communion I receive your Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.
How can it be, Lord, that you, the King of heaven and earth, desire to come to a poor creature like me, made still more unworthy by sin?
Yet I repent of my sins with all my heart, Jesus, because they have offended you, who are so good and worthy of all love. With your divine help, I firmly resolve not to commit them again, to love you more each day, and to receive you with ever greater devotion. I know that in Communion I will find the help I need to grow in goodness and holiness as you desire.
Now, my Jesus, come into my heart, which longs to receive you, to be united closely with you, and never again to be separated from you.
